The Quiet Protagonist

Review of Giulia Enders' "Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ"

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

What a talented individual Giulia Enders is! This gem of a book brings attention to a largely unknown and a priori unattractive topic and turns it into a fascinating and cool « must-know » account of what’s going on inside each of us.

The chapters on the gut being a second brain is particularly fascinating, while the section on intestinal flora and probiotics/prebiotics provides the reader with very useful actionable tips. The writing is clever, witty but the author never overdoes it. Indeed, gut health becomes appealing because of the book’s light tone and amusing analogies. Yet, that choice in terms of form does in no way undermine the book’s substance and the reader is walked through relatively complex scientific material quite seamlessly. A must-read!
